1 Year in a MLM: the Most Important Lessons I’ve Learned So Far

I’ve learned so much in my first year as a SeneGence distributor. So, so many things about owning a business and even more about myself. It has been a real journey, and there are a few things that I think are super important that I want to share with you.  Learning these things have been an uphill battle, so hopefully my take will make things a little easier for you.

  1. Get Ready to Grow – Girl, this is a business. If you truly want to make money off of this, if you truly want to change your life, your significant other’s life, your child’s life, you have to treat this as a business. Get ready to get out of your comfort zone. No, that doesn’t necessarily mean get ready to bug your friends and family to buy things (a common misconception about MLMs), get ready to learn, to put yourself out there, to find business in places you might not have thought about before, and so on and so on. This business model can move mountains. I have seen so many of my fellow MLM business owners do life altering, amazing things with their businesses; but you are going to have to put in some real work to make it happen.
  2. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others – I have had (and still sometimes do) so much trouble with this. It is so easy to see someone else’s success and wonder why you’re not at the same place with your business. Everyone’s journey is different, and the more you compare and wallow in those feelings, the more you are setting yourself back- literally setting yourself back! Just stop it now, take a deep breathe, and keep moving FORWARD.
  3. There Is Only One You- Think about it, there are thousands of makeup companies out there, thousands of skin care companies, thousands of weight loss solutions, thousands of everything. But there is only one you, and your personality, and your network, and your dream, and your hustle, and your focus. I think you get the picture. You have so much control in this opportunity. And there is a huge audience of people who can only get what they want from you- and what they want is you and your unique take on whatever product you’re selling. This point is huge. Do not underestimate the power of what you personally bring to your business. (Example: Why do people buy soups just like any other soup on the market from Oprah’s brand? Because they like, know, and trust Oprah.)
  4. Be True to Yourself- This is the hardest lesson I had to learn so far. I wanted success so badly that I started copying other successful people in my MLM to the point where I felt, and probably came off as, inauthentic. I love how helpful my leaders are (seriously, so helpful), but don’t forget what works for someone else may not be what works for you. You may have a deep passion for and huge network in the fitness world, so copying a leader who is marketing to her network of stay-at-home moms is silly. Keeping this point in mind is super important when choosing an MLM and throughout every single moment of running your business.

I really hope this helps! Running any business is hard work, but if there’s anything I’ve learned in the last year is that starting your business with the right MLM is a huge opportunity. There are so many good things that come with it that make running a business easier (a ready made product, shipping and payment handled for you, leaders and guidance to help you along, and more), but what you do with this opportunity is up to you.
